Telstra sends another 671 Jobs Offshore

In the latest round of outsourcing, Telstra will send 671 Australian jobs to Asia, including 463 internal jobs and 208 contractor roles. The job losses impact Telstra’s Global Services division as the company aims to expand its business from Asia.

Telstra’s network applications and services division is thought to be one of the main areas affected, according to a recent report in the Australian Financial Review. This division delivers technology services, such as cloud computing and has recorded substantial revenue growth recently..

In a recent statement, Telstra said, “This proposal would involve outsourcing of functions and services to industry partners in Asia. To compete effectively internationally we need to have resources in the region and the capability to scale rapidly to meet demand.

“These are not decisions we take lightly and we will consult and work closely with our people on this proposal. If a decision is made to proceed we will aim to redeploy as many affected employees as possible.”

A large portion of the jobs will land in India where Telstra has established what it calls “global delivery centres” that service around 100 major customers.

The move would start in September 2014 and be completed by July 2015 with Telstra stating it would create new roles in the division as part of the change. But it did not say where these jobs would be based.
